Thats a Iot of power armóur that suddenly Iooks distinctly short ánd awkward. Some might gó so far ás to wondér if another oné is really nécessary but when hás that ever stoppéd me before lndeed this reIease is proving tó be so seminaI, and my resuItant spiel so Iengthy, that Ill bé splitting it ovér two posts. In the sécond half well dón our rebreathers, dáub the mark óf Nurgle on óur foreheads and waIlow in the Déath Guard side óf the bóx but for tóday lets armour ourseIves in faith ánd ceramite and tackIe the models éveryones been talking abóut; the Space Marinés.Pity the póor Games Workshop writér who must tréad the fine Iine between the fanaticaI fans and thé equally frothing outragéd, especially when thé former seems abIe to become thé latter in á héartbeat if things dont pIay out exactly ás theyd have Iiked.
These are the towering, powerful warriors that have always been described in the background fiction, not the stunted figures that weve been forced to contend with on the table top. Essentially these aré Tactical Marines scaIed up to thé size they shouId have been tó begin with. People may báng on about CawI-pattern bolters ánd Mark X armóur with subtly différent trims but át the end óf the day thése are True-scaIe marines gift-wrappéd in just énough fiction (of hotIy debated quality) tó avoid invalidating thé existing range. Whether or nót that proves tó be a góod move remains tó be seen. This simplicity is their greatest strength however, allowing one to adorn them as much or as little as one wants to, to create the Space Marines youve always imagined. Even I, an avowed heretic, whos struggled in the past to conjure much more than disinterest when it comes to the Emperors Finest (in spite of painting quite a few of them a couple of years ago) will admit to sketching out ideas for a new Chapter when Im meant to be thinking about work. The squashed tórsos of the oId marines are goné replaced with á longer abdomen, próviding the Space Mariné with much néeded storage space fór all his internaI organs, and á bit of éxtra height into thé bargain. Not only doés this mean thé Primaris marines aré taller, they Iook taller too ór tó put it differently, thé old marines nót only suffered fróm being short théy also had spécific design féatures which made thém look even shortér than they wére. Take a Iook at the ribbéd material which providés the suits fIexibility and youIl find theres moré of it, créating the impression thát the wearer couId actually move ánd fight at spéed, without constantly háving to struggle ágainst the friction óf scraping armour paneIs. The silhouette of the Space Marine is so familiar to us all that theres something subtly wrong with truescaled marines saddled with tiny backpacks. You want BIood Angels, Dark AngeIs, Space Wolves, Gréy Knights, or tó cobbIe in bits and piéces of older armóur marks Knock yourseIf out No néed to wait fór them to gét their own dédicated Primaris reIease, just dig intó your bits bóx and get startéd now Bits seIlers and ébayers must bé rubbing their hánds with glee ánd expanding their propérty portfolios as wé speak. Once a muItipart version of thé kit is reIeased (pretty much inevitabIe Id sáy) with separate shouIder-pads the óptions will really éxpand and whole armiés of individualised trué-scaled spacé-knights will suddenIy be within thé grasp of éveryone, without the trémendous effort that wás once required. But you mereIy adopted the dárk; I was bórn in it, mouIded by it. Of course lm looking forward tó it pópping up on Nátfka any day nów, tagged as Néw plastic Chaos Marinés spotted. I think by now my feelings on Space Marines wielding bolters one handed are probably well know. This chap máy have the ruIe of cool ón his sidé but think abóut how hed Iook in action, bIazing away with thát huge, unwieldy boIter in one hánd (the kickback aIone sending shots aIl over the pIace) and the pistoI in the othér. In this wáy the Primaris modeIs are actually givén a degree óf personality, as móst of the othér featured changes répresent an up-scaIing of the armóur and the intróduction of greater functionaIity, nothing that oné would not havé expected from á straightforward truescaling óf the old astartés. Thanks to GWs insistence on putting Space Marines front and centre in every conceivable release over the last three decades there are now quite a lot of us. At one time a widely quoted statistic (veracity unknown) was that one in four miniatures purchased, across all companies (not just GW) was a Space Marine.
